MARLBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL
Structural Analysis of Roof Systems
Analysis of roof capacity for additional insulation and snow loads. Included seven different roof systems. Client: Marlborough Department of Public Works.
RIVER ROAD BRIDGE OVER WESTFIELD RIVER
Savoy, Massachusetts
Design of a 42 foot single span bridge replacement with a prestressed concrete deck beam superstructure. Work also included scour countermeasures and foundations for a temporary pre-engineered pedestrian bridge to maintain access over the river during construction. Client: MassDOT
MILL STREET BRIDGE OVER MILL RIVER
Amherst, Massachusetts
Design of a 40 foot single span bridge replacement with a prestressed concrete deck beam superstructure. Services included realignment of a section of Mill Street, scour countermeasures and inspection of the Factory Hollow Dam just upstream of the bridge. Client: MassDOT
WINTER STREET BRIDGE OVER MBTA/CSX RAILROAD
Framingham, Massachusetts
Design services for the replacement of the existing two lane Winter Street Bridge over MBTA/CSX in Framingham with a new 75 foot span four lane bridge with a composite concrete and steel superstructure. Minimum railroad vertical clearances, roadway profile restrictions (substandard crest curve), the widening of the bridge from two to four lanes, and the vertical space needed for utility bays were all factors to be considered in minimizing deflection and designing as shallow a superstructure as possible. Client: MassDOT
I-495 BRIDGE REPLACEMENTS
Andover/Lawrence, Massachusetts
Preliminary design for the replacement of six three span bridges with integral abutment bridges. Design also included major modifications to the horizontal and vertical alignment of approximately one mile of I-495 and ramps to accommodate construction phasing, wider shoulders and improved merge/diverge conditions. Subsequent to the preliminary design, project was selected for Design Build. Chappell Engineering was then contracted to assist MassDOT in design-build procurement, final design review and construction phase services.
ASPHALT AND ROCK CRUSHING PLANTS

Projects include garages; storage buildings; containment and foundations for tank farms; foundations for silos and equipment; retaining walls and steel framed towers supporting conveyors, bins, silos and other crushing and vibrating equipment. Over 100 assignments have been completed to date. Pictured above is a screen tower in Santiago, Chile. Client: Engineering Technologies Group, Inc.
MIRANT CORPORATION POWER PLANTS
Foundation Design
Maryland and Virginia
Design of 16 foundations for transformers, containment systems and power generating equipment. Pictured to the right is an equipment foundation at the Dickerson Power Station, Dickerson, Maryland. Client: Shaw/Stone and Webster,
MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Structural Analysis and Design
Cambridge, Massachusetts
On-call task order assignments including analysis/modification of floors and roofs and foundations for equipment installation and other miscellaneous structural tasks. Pictured is a design-build project which included the walkway and platform for the MIT nuclear reactor building. Client: Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
BOSTON WATER AND SEWER COMMISSION (BWSC) PARKING GARAGE
Structural Analysis for Rooftop Solar
Boston, Massachusetts
Chappell Engineering Associates analyzed the roof of the parking garage for its ability to carry dead load, wind load and snow loads for a proposed solar photovoltaic array. A report was issued to summarize findings and recommendations. Client: Fischbach and Moore, Inc.
